What is EPP
EPP (Expanded polypropylene) is an engineered plastic foam material. By combining polypropylene resin with magic dust, and applying heat, pressure and CO2 in an autoclave, the material is formed into small plastic beads. These small, closed-cell foam beads are injected into a steam chest to create parts custom moulded into complex shapes using steam heat & pressure. To date, both traditional hard shell and in-mold helmets have relied on Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) for shock absorption. EPS absorbs energy by plastic deformation on impact and results in permanent deformation. As a consequence, a helmet liner made of EPS will not be as good absorbing repetitive impacts. It would be a trend that most bike helmets will use a liner of Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) instead of the traditional EPS. The difference between the materials is that EPP does not deform permanently, which means it’s suitable for absorbing repetitive impacts.

The EPP shock pads sub-layer basis can easily be cleaned or disinfected, it does not absorb water and is resistant to oils and chemicals.The EPP ground shock pads can also be assembled like tesseras without problems. In no time, a large basis for artificial turf is arising. The EPP foam shock pads underlay also minimizes the strains on players’ muscles and joints: it has been approved that the predominantly closed-cell, air-filled particles have a cushion factor of 2.6 to 2.8 based on test method ISO 4651- this is deemed to be gentle on the joints in the human skeleton.
